Description
From childhood to adulthood we have all witnessed, participated, or been a victim of the games and taunts aimed at putting another individual at the center of ridicule: bullying. Cliques, which divide people into stereotypes (i.e. jocks, nerds, & goths), rumors, and mean looks, are just a few of the most common forms of bullying that we have all become familiar with.
When childhood bullies grow into adults society has an expectation that the bullying will end, however that isn’t always the case. Sometimes perpetrators outgrow these adolescent behaviors, however some never do. Have you ever been to a high school reunion and witnessed the behavior of former classmates? Often it seems nothing has changed. When child and teen bullies become adult bullies their approach may change with age, power, and money however the unkindness remains the same.
Along with bullying tactics we have always known, the popularity of social networking has brought on the rise of social bullying. We see examples of this in shows and movies including American Idol, Seinfeld, The Apprentice and The Devil Wears Prada.
This inappropriate behavior goes on in “real life” and too many adults dismiss this until there is media attention given to the tragic consequences of bullying, both with children and adults. As adults and parents, we need to begin to understand bullying as an issue not only in our community, but also throughout the entire country and world as well.
This month the Corona Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the City of Corona will present, “Some Mean Kids Never Grow Up,” as a part of the Women’s Leadership Luncheon. Join us on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at the Sizzler Restaurant (1461 Rimpau Avenue) in Corona and hear from special guest Shirley Zink, Founder and President of the Simple Acts of Care and Kindness Foundation (SACK) a non-profit organization established to encourage acts of kindness among young people and adults. The SACK foundation is focused on ensuring a better world for many generations to come. A world built upon respect, chivalry, and goodwill.
Come learn more about bullying in today’s society and how we can combat it with kindness because although many of us feel deeply uncomfortable when we witness bullying we don’t always know how to react and address these situations.
The Women’s Leadership Luncheons are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sizzler Restaurant in Corona. There is a discount of $5 if reserved by March 28, 2014. Luncheons are open to everyone. For more information, contact Denea Breitenbucher at 951-737-3350 or Karen Spiegel at 951-833-8136 or visit www.MyChamber.org.
