Description
The Navy will christen the nation's first submarine named after the state of California on Saturday, Nov. 6 in Norfolk, Va. When delivered, the USS California (SSN 781) will be the most advanced attack submarine in the world.
To celebrate the historic occasion and the unprecedented technological advances in USS California, the Navy is using this opportunity to inspire grade-schoolers to be the next generation of scientists and engineers. Dubbed the "USS California Science Experience," the three-site California tour will kick-off in inland Southern California's Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division on the day of the christening and travel to San Diego's Naval Base Point Loma on Nov. 15 and to Los Angeles' California Science Center on Nov. 18. Events will feature a broadcast of the ceremony, as well as the California debut of the Mission Ocean Challenge, a competition where teams use a submarine simulation to find an underwater volcano.
The Inland Empire's Navy command located in Norco, Calif. - the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Corona Division - is offering a rare opportunity for students and the public to participate in this historic occasion. Called the "USS California Science Experience," NSWC Corona is hosting students, primarily 4th through 8th graders, for a hands-on interactive science and engineering experience, which includes games, exhibits and displays, and will feature a remote broadcast of the ceremony. This is the only California-based event on the day of the christening and will be the California debut of the Mission Ocean Challenge, a competition where teams use a submarine simulation to find an underwater volcano.
