Captain Stephen Murray of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division, will be our featured speaker for this meeting. Yolanda Carrillo, Executive Director of the Corona-Norco Family YMCA, will emcee.
Highlights on the agenda include updates from community groups, new information on local economic development, legislative advocacy, and more.
Captain Steve Murray assumed command of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division on Aug. 1, 2014. As commanding officer, he leads nearly 3,000 Sailors, Navy civilians and support contractors in Corona's critical mission as the independent assessment and analysis agent responsible for gauging warfighting capability U.S Navy ships and aircraft; as the metrology and calibration agent for the Navy and Marine Corps; and the range systems engineering agent for Navy and Marine Corps tactical training ranges.
Murray is a native of Pennsylvania and enlisted in the Navy in 1986 and served onboard USS Lafayette (SSBN 616 Gold) as an Electronics Technician, completing six deterrent patrols. During these patrols, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science through Charter Oak State College in April 1989 and was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in 1991. He completed division officer tours onboard USS Hayler (DD 997) as Main Propulsion Assistant and Navigator and USS Tempest (PC 2) as Operations Officer and Executive Officer. His department head tours were as Chief Engineer in USS Peterson (DD 969) and as an Engineering Plant Assessor with Afloat Training Group, Atlantic.
Following fourteen years of sea duty, he moved overseas as an Exercise Planner on the Naval Forces, Central Command staff in Bahrain primarily planning naval exercises with Qatar, Oman, United Arab Emirates and Jordan. Reporting to NAVCENT in the days after 9/11, he also provided staff support to the Marine movement ashore into Kandahar, Afghanistan as part of Enduring Freedom. His next sea tour was as precommissioning Executive Officer in USS Nitze (DDG 94), taking the ship from the building yard in Bath, Maine, to her homeport in Norfolk, Va. A highlight of this tour was visiting multiple times with the ship’s namesake, Secretary Paul Nitze. Following this tour, he returned to Bahrain as Chief Staff Officer for Destroyer Squadron FIVE ZERO. His afloat command tour was with Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron SIX, where he deployed to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake and to the United Arab Emirates.
In 2003, he graduated from both the Naval War College earning a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies with distinction and from University of Phoenix with a Master of Science degree in Computer Information Systems. Other tours ashore include Country Program Director at the Navy International Programs Office and as a Federal Executive Fellow at the Brookings Institution where he researched the trends in replacing the labor force in the United States shipbuilding industry.
He completed an assignment as a Branch Head on the staff of the Director for Surface Warfare (OPNAV N96) where he sponsored the Ship Self Defense System, Navigation, and Air Warfare Enterprise Test and Evaluation programs and served most recently as the Deputy Major Program Manager for the Ship Self Defense System in Program Executive Officer for Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS 10.0).
